Dan, try the WEB OPAC of UP Diliman …or you can also call the SIL (Summer Institute of Linguistics) library to check if there is any literature you can use for your research…the Department of Linguistics focuses more on theoretical concerns rather than the applied ones (DLSU has graduate program in applied linguistics, so might as well check the DLSU library)..Good luck!!

It means descriptive? I really wanted to have relevant studies coming from UP which are theoretically based.

Hi! I’m a graduate student at UP Stat, and I’m considering statistical natural language processing as a (masteral) thesis topic (starting next sem). I’m wondering if this is something the UP Linguistics Dept can help me with. (Honestly, and embarrassingly, I didn’t know the UP Linguistics Dept even existed before seeing this site. Sorry.) Would this be part of one of its research areas? Do you think there would be someone who would be interested? Thank you in advance!

Hi Rolan! It’s good to know that you’re considering natural language processing as a topic for your MA Thesis..But unfortunately, the Dep’t. of Linguistics focuses more on theoretical domains than the applied ones, like NLP..There’s one senior faculty member though, whom I believe might be interested to read your proposal. He’s Dr. Jonathan Malicsi, a specialist of English Syntax and who is also in-charge of the department’s extension program. He is very approachable, but pretty busy🙂
And you don’t have to feel bad being unaware of the existence of the department…I actually didn’t know as well that UP Statistics has a graduate program🙂
Good luck on your research activities!
